Slava Ukraini (Glory to Ukraine) Interlocking Crochet Square
Fiber arts have always been a powerful form of resistance, storytelling, and protest. From abolition quilts stitched with hidden messages to suffragette banners demanding rights, and now to modern-day protest crochet, fiber artists have continuously used their work to amplify voices, preserve history, and inspire action when words alone were not enough.
This interlocking crochet square, featuring the Ukrainian trident and the phrase Slava Ukraini (Glory to Ukraine), carries forward that tradition. Each stitch stands in solidarity with the people of Ukraine, a nation fighting not just for its sovereignty but for the very ideals of democracy and freedom in the face of authoritarian aggression.
The world has been reminded time and again that freedom is fragile. Recent events have demonstrated just how vulnerable Ukraine remains—not only to military threats from Russia but to political and economic pressures designed to force its surrender. Leaders who once pledged to stand with Ukraine have begun to retreat, using so-called "peace plans" as a means of undermining Ukrainian sovereignty while emboldening authoritarian regimes worldwide. As Ukraine fights for its survival, its people continue to resist—not just with weapons, but with culture, art, and unwavering determination.
This pattern is offered for free in solidarity. However, if you wish to support my work, you can purchase any of my other patterns, or—more importantly—donate directly to organizations providing aid to Ukraine. Some of the most effective groups include:
Razom for Ukraine – Providing humanitarian aid, medical supplies, and advocacy. (U.S. tax deductible)
United24 – Ukraine’s official fundraising platform, supporting defense, medical aid, and rebuilding. (Not U.S. tax deductible)
Come Back Alive – Supporting Ukrainian defenders with non-lethal aid, training, and technology. (Not U.S. tax deductible)
Voices of Children – Providing psychological and humanitarian support to children affected by war. (Not U.S. tax deductible)
The Sternenko Project – Directly aiding Ukrainian defenders.
Even if you cannot afford to donate, your project matters because it helps keep Ukraine relevant in the global conversation. By crocheting this square, you are not just engaging in a creative act—you are participating in a tradition of resistance through art.
Every stitch, every donation, and every conversation helps keep Ukraine visible. As a Ukrainian friend recently told me:
"As long as there is support for Ukraine in the world, Ukraine is perceived as a subject—as a state. If that support disappears, Ukraine's subjectivity in the eyes of politicians will vanish."
Let your hands tell a story of resilience, solidarity, and hope—and let that story inspire others to do the same.
Slava Ukraini.
With Love and Resistance,
SJ Allen
